Whether your child has just started school, moved on to high school, or simply just changed schools, going to a school where you don’t know anyone can be daunting.

Not all kids know how to make friends, and this can cause anxiety for them.

It’s just as hard on parents because they want their children to be happy when they go to school and having friends makes school more pleasant.

However, as a parent, you can guide your child through this period and help them transition smoothly into their new school and make new friends.

Prepare them mentally

Open communication: Talk openly with your child about their anxieties and concerns.

Let them know it's okay to feel nervous and that making friends takes time.

Positive reinforcement: Emphasise the exciting aspects of the new school, such as new subjects, new teachers, and the opportunity to meet new people.

Social skills practice: Role-play social situations like introducing themselves, asking questions, and joining a conversation.

Foster confidence

Highlight their strengths: Remind your child of their unique qualities and talents.

This can boost their self-esteem and make them feel more confident in social situations.

Encourage participation: Encourage your child to participate in class discussions and activities.

This can help them become more visible and approachable.

Embrace their interests: Support your child's interests and hobbies.

This can help them find common ground with other children who share similar passions.

Monitor and support

Observe and listen: Pay attention to your child's social interactions.

Observe how they are doing at school and listen to their experiences.

Offer support: If your child is experiencing difficulties making friends, offer support and guidance. This could involve talking to the teacher, school counselor, or other parents.

Be patient: Making friends takes time. Encourage your child to be patient and persistent.
