Review: Master Bonsai

OLGA ACCOLLA|Published

by Rudi Adam (Metz Press, R350)

I like to consider myself an enthusiastic gardener open to suggestions, but when it comes to bonsai, I put up the white flag. This is because I do not view the training of bonsai as gardening, but rather an art form and this book confirms my perception.

When you read that a particular bonsai “has been in training” for anything from 20 to 30 years to achieve its form, it can only be called art, or perhaps an exercise in patience.

This book, by respected bonsai expert Rudi Adam, reflects the passion of those devoted to this art form. There is ample advice on selecting the right tree, suitable soil and the tools to “train” the tree.

There are beautiful pictures and detailed sketches and step-by-step photographs for special techniques. Some of the bonsai have been photographed over four seasons. It contains an extensive species guide with detailed information on growing and maintenance.

This book would make a cherished gift to a bonsai enthusiast or anyone interested in taking up this art form.
