by Melanie Brummer (Metz Press, R185)
This is Melanie Brummer’s second book on the craft of dyeing and this time with a special focus on scarves.
The techniques used are simple enough for beginners, yet creative enough to appeal to experienced crafters.
Each project is explained clearly with step-by-step instructions and photographs.
What I found useful is that each project is rated according to the level of difficulty, so that you can start practising with the easier scarves and progress to the more involved ones.
Brummer speaks of her “addiction” for silk scarves and I can quite understand after seeing the beautiful items she produces.
The author explains the difference between dyeing and printing on fabric and how different fabrics produce different results even when using the same dyes.
Brummer shows how you can use found objects or everyday items in your home to produce unusual patterns and prints.
She outlines the basic equipment needed and provides useful tips to achieve good results.
With 50 projects to choose from, you will always have the right accessory for any outfit.
I’ve always admired women who know how to wear a scarf, and after poring over the fabulous projects in this book, I feel inspired to join their ranks.
