Review: Hubble Bubble

by Jane Lovering (Publisher: Choc Lit, R225)

The title and cover of the book are misleading as they give the impression this story may be set in medieval times, when in fact, it is the present.

Jane Lovering’s heroine, Holly Grey, has a wicked sense of humour and judging by her writing, Holly is almost certainly an extension of the author’s own personality.

Holly is a capable, contemporary chick, accustomed to looking after others. But she hasn’t quite got her life together. For instance, though she has no long-term interest in him, she nonetheless, falls into the arms of a rather rude film director who isn’t above checking out her new love interest for a threesome. Unsurprisingly, her interest in him does not extend that far.

The characters are a little off-kilter, which probably accounts for their appeal. These are real people living in Yorkshire, looking to change their lives.

An ad in the paper draws Holly, Megan, Isobel and Eve into Vivienne’s circle and the women cast a “magic spell” which will bring about the transformation they seek.

Holly seems to be the catalyst for the shifts the women experience, and the consequences of her wish for a little excitement are fast-paced and humorous.

This is a modern comedic love story that ties up the loose ends very neatly.
