Instead of giving an adult take on a book for children or young readers, the Daily News has asked Saskiya Naicker to review Buckle and Squash and the Land of the Giants
This book is about two sisters. Eliza wants to be a “swashbuckling” hero and Lavender dreams of being a fairy tale princess who will marry Prince Magnus the Magnetic.
They live with their grandma Maud, who spends her days waiting for the end of the world, in Old Tumbledown Farm in the realm of Squerb.
Gertrude their goat and Bonnet, the midget giant also lives with them.
Lavender’s dream of marrying one of the princes of Squerb is shattered when she hears they are all getting married in a mass surprise royal wedding. And none of them has chosen her.
She decides to get the help of three witches to make her tiny and magical so she can go to a tiny kingdom to find a magical prince who will marry her.
But what she doesn’t realise is that while she is tiny and waiting for magical things to happen, a giant steals her home and everyone in it.
Now it’s up to Eliza, Lavender and Bonnet to escape the Land of the Giants. This book is so funny and exciting. I laughed a lot as I was reading.
There are lots of strange words that my mom had to help me with, but this was fun because we could read the book together. I loved Lavender and sometimes think I may be a bit like her… – Saskiya Naicker
