On Tuesday, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) in KwaZulu-Natal kicked off the #16Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children campaign with a silent picket.
This initiative, spearheaded by the NPA's male employees under the banner of NPA Men Ambassadors reflected the organisation's commitment to combating Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF) in South Africa.
KZN's NPA spokesperson, Natasha Ramkisson-Kara, told the Daily News that the decision to decentralise the protest was made due to the considerable distances between the various provincial offices.
“It was decided that each office/court will have its own demonstrations,” she said about their attempt to improve the campaign’s reach.
The silent protests were not only confined to KwaZulu-Natal; the national office in Pretoria also hosted a demonstration, signalling that the NPA’s message of solidarity and action is resonating throughout the country.
The event is a part of the NPA’s broader GBV 2025 Call to Action, aligned with their campaign theme, “Men of the NPA Against GBVF.”
In addressing employees and men ambassadors, advocate Anton du Plessis, the deputy national director of public prosecutions, affirmed the need to address the rampant issues of GBVF plaguing South African society.
He said: “Gender-Based Violence and Femicide continue to afflict South African society, bringing trauma, loss, and injustice on individuals and communities.”
Du Plessis highlighted the role of the NPA in the criminal justice system, which was to champion for justice for survivors while fostering a culture of accountability, respect, and dignity.
He said that their collective action served as a powerful reminder that all men within the NPA must stand up against all forms of GBV and demonstrate solidarity with their female colleagues.
And that their stance was affirmation of the NPA's dedication to justice, equality, and social transformation.
“This campaign encourages men from all walks of life to join the fight against gender violence, ensuring that victims' voices are heard and respected”.
