After another year of giving to those in need, the Daily News Milk Fund (DNMF) initiative is currently wrapping up the year by spreading some Christmas cheer through its distribution of milk and porridge supplies to over 100 beneficiaries.
Caring for communities has been the way to go for the DNMF since 1935 and in that time the initiative has reached out to vetted creches, pre-school and welfare organisations across KwaZulu Natal with milk and essential food items.
Sameera Kareem, the CSI manager and project coordinator for Independent Media, said it was a “heartwarming” feeling to lend a helping hand to those in need.
She said their efforts were always aimed at alleviating hunger and promoting well-being in communities facing food security challenges.
Kareem said they understood the financial constraints their beneficiaries faced, especially during the festive season. Therefore, it gave the DNMF team “immense joy” knowing that they were able to provide nutritious meals to children.
“Their gratitude fuels our commitment. It is a privilege to coordinate an initiative that brings a world of good and ensures these young ones have a comforting, nourishing start to their day during this festive period," said Kareem.

Nomusa Shabane, from one of the DNMF beneficiaries, the Imbaliyethu Creche and Pre-School, hailed the significant role the fund played in providing aid to underprivileged children.
Shabane said the porridge they received every three months helped the children to grow “well and healthily”.
“The porridge helps the children to have a smooth skin and grow well and they become happy when they eat it, even on weekends the children come to the creche because they want the porridge.”
Shabane said her organisation has been collaborating with the DNMF since 2009.
“We thank the Daily News Milk Fund for their reliability and consistent support. I also would like to thank the other creches from Inanda for trusting me to collect their supply of porridge on their behalf,” said Shabane
Another beneficiary, Mthobisi Mthimkhulu, a social worker at Portshepstone Child Welfare, a non-profit organisation, said that their organisation extended assistance to as many people as their resources would stretch.
“I’ve been working with the DNMF for over five years, and as an organisation that supports children, we often encounter situations where we need to provide food parcels to children in desperate need.
Mthimkhulu said they were often in need of porridge, but were grateful for the assistance received from the DNMF.
