Cape Town - The iconic Table Mountain has been crowned Africa’s Leading Tourist Attraction at the prestigious World Travel Awards for the fourth consecutive year.

The accolade comes ahead of an expected bumper tourism season, which will see many operators looking to bounce back from the losses caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Table Mountain Aerial Cableway Company (TMACC) Managing Director Wahida Parker said they were beyond excited about the award.

“The World Travel Awards is the gold standard in the travel world and acknowledges service excellence and responsible operators each year.

“We are beyond excited at the news that we retained our title.

“We faced some very worthy competitors especially, from our hometown heroes such as Robben Island and the V&A Waterfront.

Most of the nominees in our category were from Cape Town, which shows again what a wonderful and successful mix of attractions we have in the Mother City,” said Parker.

Table Mountain has also been nominated in the next stage of the annual World Travel Awards categories, where the focus shifted from regional to global contests.

Table Mountain and the Cableway have been nominated in two categories.

“The World’s Leading Cable Car Ride category pits TMACC against other cable car operators from around the world.

The competition in the World’s Leading Tourist Attraction, meanwhile, is particularly fierce where Table Mountain has been nominated along with a long list that includes the likes of the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, the USA’s Grand Canyon National Park, the Great Wall of China, Machu Picchu in Peru, and Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania,” said Parker.

Voting for the awards is open to the public as well as tourism and travel operators.

Mayco member for Economic Growth James Vos congratulated the Table Mountain team for delivering a world-class experience.

“These awards are the gold standard in the travel world and bring significant economic benefits to the city.

“Having been to communities and attractions all across our metro and meeting Capetonians in the tourism and hospitality industry who are visibly proud of their home city, I know that we are deserving of every accolade.

I have said it before and I will say it again; Cape Town is Africa’s best city because of the people who make up its cultures, cuisines, and communities,” he said.
