Mandla Elliot Mthembu, the ex-husband of South African media personality Khanyi Mbau, died in New York City after suffering complications from a stroke.

The announcement was made by his family in a heartfelt statement, revealing that Mthembu passed away on the evening of September 21, 2025.

After being readmitted to hospital following a second stroke, Mthembu faced significant health challenges. Despite the dedicated efforts of medical personnel, he ultimately succumbed to complications related to the stroke. His passing marks a poignant moment for many who knew him as a businessman and political figure.

“Throughout his life, Mr Mthembu was known for his entrepreneurial spirit, his contribution to South Africa’s business landscape and his commitment to the values of the ANC,” the family statement read. “His legacy will be remembered by many across the country.”

The Mthembu family has requested privacy as they navigate this profoundly painful time, mourning the loss of a father, brother, and friend.

Mthembu gained public attention in 2006 when he entered into a customary marriage with the popular actress and television personality Khanyi Mbau. The couple shared a daughter, Khanukani Khanz Mbau, and were often portrayed in the media as an “it” couple, flaunting a luxurious lifestyle complete with matching yellow Lamborghinis. However, their high-profile relationship was not without its challenges. The marriage, often scrutinised for its apparent glamour, ultimately ended in 2009 amidst allegations of abuse.

Following their separation, Mthembu opted for a life away from the public eye while Mbau continued to thrive in her career. She has since rebuilt her image and maintained her presence in the entertainment industry, yet the legacy of her marriage to Mthembu remains a significant part of her story.
