South African broadcaster Hulisani Ravele has revealed on social media why she chooses not to celebrate Christmas or New Year’s the conventional way.

“Things you do not wish me: Merry Christmas. Happy New Year on Jan 1st,” Ravele wrote.

“I may live in a world that dictates a particular way of life or marks certain things because ‘that’s what we know and have always done,’ but my spirit moves to a different rhythm. And don’t get me wrong, you don’t need to dance to my beat, just let my drum play freely. Breathing the same air doesn’t mean we’re on the same wavelength. Nor do we need to be.”

Her post drew responses from fans who resonated with her perspective.

Thulani Malevu commented, “Nazo, an awakened great spirit.”

Gomotsegang Kwena Mojapelo said, “I wish sometimes I could travel through your brain and understand your way of doing and defining things, totally admirable. Happy holidays, Mama.”

Lerato Mogaole added, “Finally, someone with the same spirit as I am! I always just because everyone is doing it doesn’t mean I must do the same. I am my own person with my own beliefs.”

In a year-end reflection shared alongside a series of pictures, Ravele spoke about her journey over the past year.

“Imagine being obedient to your ancestors when they told you, ‘It’s time to walk away, we will be your managers from now on,’ and they deliver on their promise. I don’t have to imagine, because this is/has been my reality this year,” she wrote.

She also shared a message a friend told her: “God and your Guides have loved you so loudly, and it’s beautiful to watch you evolving and becoming who they have always wanted you to become.”

Ravele took time to thank those who supported her along the way.

“To every client, brand and agency, to every person who spoke favourably of my name in rooms I was not in, to everyone who clapped, cheered and affirmed me in-person or via the comments section, to my incredible team behind the scenes who give of their amazing talents so I can effortlessly serve with mine, ndo livhuwesa."

"Na ngoho muthu ndi muthu nga vhathu. (I am living. Indeed, a person is a person because of other people.) Let’s do it again next year!”
