‘At 21, I had a million in my account,’ Yvonne Chaka Chaka says in a resurfaced clip that has reignited conversations about wealth, fame and discipline in the music industry.
The interview, originally recorded in 2021, has recently gained fresh attention after being reshared by South African content curator Takalani Molapo on TikTok.
The clip has since garnered thousands of views and sparked discussion about how artists manage their finances at the height of their careers.
In 2021, Chaka Chaka joined singer Zolani Mahola for a series of financial education discussions as part of the "Old Mutual On The Money" programme.
Hosted at AMPD Studios, the conversations explored the relationship between music and business, with a focus on helping artists and entrepreneurs understand how to manage and grow their income.
During the discussion, Chaka Chaka reflected on her early financial success. “I must say, you know, at 21, I had a million in my account. Thanks to Phil Hollis. I did a Pepsi ad with Michael Jackson and Tina Turner,” she said.
Her comments offered insight into the scale of her career at a young age and the commercial opportunities that came with it.
She also compared large-scale concerts of today with the shows she headlined decades ago.
“I look at ‘Fill Up The Dome’, and I am like, Brenda Fassie and I filled up Venda Stadium. People came to our shows, and they paid. So it is possible to do all those things,” she said.
While she acknowledged the financial milestones she reached early on, Chaka Chaka was clear that money alone is not enough.
“But I can tell you, money comes and goes. Money needs to be respected. As I said, make your money work for you. Yes, be generous with your family."
"Because we, as Africans, need to look out for each other. You must make sure that you invest your money,” she noted.
Born in 1965, Chaka Chaka was about 21 in 1986, shortly after the release of her debut album “I’m in Love with a DJ" in 1985.
The project sold more than 35,000 copies within two weeks, marking the start of a career that combined musical success with financial awareness.
