Lerato Mvelase officially stepped into a new chapter of her career this past Sunday, and it was one she clearly did not take lightly.
The seasoned actress and television host made her on air debut on "Power FM" as the host of “Power Perspective”, a Sunday evening show that forms part of the station’s refreshed 2026 line up.
While listeners tuned in expecting her familiar confidence, they were met with her vulnerability. Right at the start of the show, Mvelase struggled to hold back tears as she spoke about how long she had waited for the opportunity to be on radio.
Despite a career that spans over two decades in television and film, she admitted that this moment felt different.
She shared that her children and her mother were seated outside the studio during the broadcast, a detail that made the moment even more personal.
“I apologise in advance because my children are sitting outside the studio right now with my mom, and this chapter of my life is something that I know I waited for for many, many years,” she said tearfully.
She spoke about working hard for her family and how meaningful it was to have them witness the start of this new journey.
Mvelase also thanked the station for believing in her, acknowledging that radio was not something she initially saw herself doing at this stage of her career.
“And I just wanna say thank you to the station for this moment because it’s not something I was looking at doing at this point in my life, without realising that God was just aligning me. My ancestors were aligning me for this very moment,” she said.
In her opening remarks, the 43-year-old mother of two reflected on faith, patience and timing. She encouraged listeners to trust that their moment will come, even when it feels delayed.
“Sometimes we do other things, thinking that some things are not for us, but God always has a different plan,” she added.
Known for her roles in productions such as “Home Affairs”, “Isibaya”, “Justice Served” and Netflix’s “Marked”, Mvelase has built a reputation as a respected and award nominated performer. Her move into radio adds another layer to a career that continues to evolve.
As for “Power Perspective”, she explained that the show aims to humanise the country’s political and social conversations. Instead of shying away from difficult topics, she wants to centre lived experiences and real stories.
