Following three years of being hosted in Mpumalanga, the Metro FM Music Awards are moving to their next home.
The 2026 Metro FM Music Awards will be hosted in the playground of South Africa, Durban.
The announcement was made in Durban at five-star hotel, The Oyster Box. Media joined various stakeholders from the eThekwini municipality and the SABC, to celebrate the awards coming home.
The Metro FM Music Awards were last hosted in KwaZulu Natal in 2017.
Metro FM breakfast show presenter DJ Sabby hosted the media launch, along with the multi-talented Hope Mbhele.
Councillor Thembo Ntuli, Chairperson of the eThekwini Municipality's Economic Development and Planning Committee announced the news with much excitement.
“Durban is proud to be once again the home of the icon, celebration of South African music and culture. This partnership positions Durban as a leading events destination, boost tourism, create jobs and enhance the city’s brand, both nationally and internationally.
“Hosting this prestigious celebration honing South African music once again is not only a privilege but a moment of pride of our community. These awards represent the creativity, excellence and vibrant spirit of our nation. Values that resonate with our people.
“We are excited to open doors for artists, roll out the red carpet for industry leaders, partners and fans who continue to shape the landscape of South Africa.”
Ntuli went on to explain that the awards bring more than entertainment but also economic opportunities, cultural exchanges and a shared sense of unity.
Provinces across the country are able to approach The Metro FM Music Awards and lobby for them to take place in their city and deal is then struck that will benefit both parties.
eThekwini Municipality's City Manager Musa Mbhele welcomed the awards back home and revealed that the city has invested R60 million into the Metro FM Music Awards over the three financial years.
“This is not just one of those events; it is a targeted investment designed to stimulate economic growth and develop our creative industries and strengthen Durban’s position as South Africa’s leading destination for major events.”
Durban hosting the Metro FM Music Awards was well received, with cheer throughout the room, as stakeholders teased at what is to come and how it will benefit the city of Durban beyond the one day of festivities.
The Metro FM Music Awards will take place on April 25, 2026.
