The internationally acclaimed Museum of Illusions is set to open its latest South African attraction at the Gateway Theatre of Shopping on Saturday, April 25.

The Durban launch follows successful openings in Johannesburg and Cape Town, marking a further expansion of the brand, which originated in Zagreb, Croatia, in 2015. The museum has since established a presence in major cities including New York, Paris and Dubai.

Unlike traditional museums, the attraction offers a fully interactive experience where visitors are encouraged to engage directly with exhibits. Its approach combines science and art in what the brand describes as “edutainment”.

Exhibits at the Durban venue include the Tilted Room, where visitors experience a distorted sense of gravity; the Clone Room, which creates multiple versions of a person in a single space; and the Infinity Room, designed to produce the illusion of endless space.

Owner Mark Collie said Durban’s vibrant culture made it a natural fit for the attraction, following strong public interest in other South African cities.

The venue is also positioned as a multi-purpose space, catering for social outings, school visits and corporate events.

The museum will operate daily, with extended trading hours from 9am to 10pm on Fridays and Saturdays. Tickets will be available at the door, although visitors are encouraged to book online in advance.
