DJ Tira, co-founder of Fact Durban Rocks, has confirmed that this year’s New Year’s Eve edition will mark the final event organised by the current partners, closing a long chapter in the life of one of Durban’s most recognisable music brands.
Taking to social media, the award-winning DJ and entrepreneur shared a team statement addressing fans’ concerns about the decision to close earlier than usual on New Year’s Eve.
“Since July, we have received many concerns about closing early at midnight on New Year’s Eve, and we understand those sentiments,” the team noted.
“We wanted to observe the city’s response regarding New Year’s Eve closing times before determining our next steps.”
Fact Durban Rocks has been a fixture on the city’s events calendar since 2011, operating twice a year from 6pm to 6am.
Over the course of more than a decade, the event has evolved into a major cultural moment that attracts thousands of music lovers to Durban, significantly contributing to the city’s festive season economy.
Reflecting on the brand’s journey, the organisers pointed to its resilience during difficult periods, particularly the Covid-19 years.
“We are proud to have been the first brand to emerge from Covid with two picnics, and the only event to host two outdoor broadcasts during that challenging period,” they said.
“This December marks our 30th Fact event, a milestone that feels deeply meaningful,” they said. “We believe it is the right moment to pass the torch to new, upcoming talent.”
The team confirmed that the upcoming New Year’s Eve celebration will be the last event under the current ownership structure. “This New Year’s Eve will be the final event organised by the current partners. In January 2026, the Fact brand and its trademarks will be put up for sale.”
The team said that the decision was not taken lightly, noting the strong relationship between the brand and its audience.
“We have cherished every Fact, event and especially value the lasting relationships we have built with our community.”
They also acknowledged the commitment of fans who attended late into the night and made plans to get home safely.
Looking back on the journey, they expressed gratitude to those who supported the brand over the years. “Over the years, we have faced many challenges, but the support from our fans, sponsors and partners has been incredible. We are deeply grateful to the city, the province and many others who have believed in us along the way.”
The organisers also thanked the sponsors who helped sustain the event. “Our sponsors, including SAB, Schweppes and many others, have played a vital role in making these events possible.”
In closing, they invited fans to gather once more. “Thank you for being part of our journey,” they said. “It has been an honour to serve this community of Fact fans, and we hope to see you one last time.”
The final Fact Durban Rocks event will take place on Wednesday, December 31, running from 2pm to 2am.
