In the vibrant coastal city of Durban, South Africa, a culinary talent has emerged, captivating audiences with his unique blend of cooking and storytelling.

Joshua Ronaldo Jacobs, known as Josh Jacobs on social media, has transitioned from the bustling kitchens of professional restaurants to the dynamic world of food vlogging and digital content creation.

His journey is a testament to the power of passion, creativity, and authenticity in the culinary arts.

A culinary start

Jacobs' love for food began in his childhood, growing up in Sydenham, where his parents worked long hours.

“From the time I was much younger, my parents would work hectic shifts, and there would be no one to cook dinner. I started experimenting in the kitchen, playing around with ingredients and cooking dinner for the family,” he recalls.

This early exposure to cooking ignited a passion that would shape his future.

After enrolling at the International Hotel School to study Culinary Arts, Jacobs eagerly volunteered at various events, gaining invaluable experience.

“I would work as a trainee chef preparing all the mise en place for the celebrity chefs’ shows. I thought, ‘Wow, how amazing it must be to teach cooking lessons in front of hundreds of people. Hopefully, one day that could be me',” he shares.

The shift to digital storytelling

While Jacobs thrived in the fast-paced environment of professional kitchens, he felt a yearning for more visibility and connection.

“I’ve always loved the adrenaline rush of being in the kitchen, but I wanted to change the culinary scene and how people viewed it,” he explains.

This desire led him to explore the world of digital storytelling.

Jacobs began vlogging his food experiences, sharing quick and easy recipes that resonated with his audience.

“I wanted to be in the limelight rather than in the background of the hot kitchen, not being noticed for all my hard work,” he says.

His authentic approach and engaging content quickly garnered attention, allowing him to build a following and participate in numerous cooking competitions.

Lessons learned

Stepping away from the conventional kitchen space has taught Jacobs valuable lessons about individuality and success.

“There’s success in standing out from the crowd, not following what others are doing,” he reflects.

This mindset has been instrumental in shaping his brand and vision as a content creator.

Starting each day with gratitude, Jacobs emphasises the importance of a strong foundation for success.

“I begin my day with a prayer to God, thanking Him for what He’s done for me and how far He’s taken me,” he shares.

This spiritual connection fuels his creativity and drives him to inspire others through his culinary journey.

Authenticity and connection

Jacobs' platform is a blend of curated content and genuine authenticity.

“I always promised to keep what I do authentic and be a good person off the camera as well,” he asserts.

His commitment to sharing both the good and the bad aspects of life resonates with his audience, creating a sense of community around his content.

Food, for Jacobs, is not just about cooking; it’s an emotional and cultural experience.

“I cook with my heart and soul, no cooks, no measurements, just pure love,” he explains.

Coming from a large family, he cherishes the gatherings centred around food, viewing them as wholesome activities that bring people together.

The joy of storytelling

One of Jacobs' favourite aspects of creating food content is the storytelling element.

“I love that I get to tell my story and share parts of my life that people might not know,” he says.

His narratives inspire others to prepare meals and enjoy the cooking process, fostering a sense of joy and creativity in the kitchen.

Navigating challenges

The digital space can be demanding, and Jacobs has faced challenges as a creator.

“Brand alignment is very important; choosing who you work with reflects the person you are,” he advises.

By carefully selecting partnerships that align with his values, Jacobs protects his creativity and maintains his peace in the fast-paced world of content creation.
