Let’s compare apples with apples: The sweet, tart and crunchy guide to choosing the perfect apple

There’s an old saying that goes, “An apple a day keeps the doctor away,” but we all know not all apples are created equal.

While they’re undoubtedly the perfect healthy, on-the-go snack and a staple in most of our fruit bowls, apples can range from deliciously tart to satisfyingly sweet.

In South Africa, we’re spoiled for choice when it comes to the wide variety of apples lining our store shelves.

Our local orchards, particularly in the Western Cape, produce some of the crispest, juiciest varieties you’ll find anywhere in the world.

But with so many colours and names to choose from, it’s easy to feel a little overwhelmed when deciding which apple to buy.

Whether you’re after a tart crunch to brighten up a salad or something sugary-sweet for your kids’ lunchboxes, here’s the lowdown on the apples you’re most likely to find in your local store.

Something sweet

Royal Gala

If you want an apple that everyone in the house will enjoy, the Royal Gala is a safe bet. It’s sweet, floral, and usually has those pretty red-and-yellow stripes. It’s thin-skinned and juicy, making it the perfect "on-the-go" snack.

Fuji

For those who have a serious sweet tooth, the Fuji is king. It’s a dense, heavy apple that packs a lot of natural sugar. It might not always be the prettiest (it often has a duller, dusty-red blush), but it’s incredibly crunchy. Some people even say they can taste a hint of honey or pear in every bite.

Topred and Starking

These are the classic, deep-red apples that look exactly like the ones in storybooks. They are very mild and sweet. They aren’t quite as "fizzy" or acidic as other types, so they’re great if you prefer a softer, more mellow eating experience.

The all-rounders

Pink Lady

It’s hard to miss these thanks to their signature bright pink colour. The Pink Lady is widely considered the best "snacking" apple in the country because it hits the perfect balance. It’s sweet, but it has just enough tang to keep things interesting.

Joya

Think of the Joya as the Pink Lady’s slightly more intense cousin. It’s exceptionally firm and has a bold, refreshing flavour. If you’re packing a bag for a long hike or a day out, this is the one to grab because it’s hardy and won't bruise as easily as the thinner-skinned varieties.

For the cooks

Granny Smith

The bright green icon of the fruit bowl. This is the only way to go if you love a tart, zingy flavour that makes your mouth water. Because the flesh is so firm, it doesn’t turn to mush when you heat it. If you’re planning a Sunday afternoon crumble or a classic apple tart, the Granny Smith is your only real choice.

Golden Delicious

These are the yellow beauties we all grew up with. They are mild and sweet with very delicate skin. While they are great for snacking, they are also a secret weapon in the kitchen. They break down beautifully, so if you’re making your own applesauce or adding some sweetness to a savoury pork dish, this is the one you want.
