Why reformer Pilates is the ultimate workout for everyone

There was a time when workouts were supposed to leave people feeling destroyed. The sweatier, louder and more punishing the class, the more successful it seemed.
“No pain, no gain” became the unofficial slogan of modern wellness culture. But somewhere between burnout, stress, anxiety, and bodies running on caffeine and survival mode, the fitness conversation started changing.
Once dismissed as a “soft workout” reserved for dancers, influencers, or women in matching activewear sets, reformer Pilates has quietly become one of the most talked-about fitness movements in the wellness world.
And according to experts, most people still completely misunderstand what it actually does.
The biggest misconception is that it’s easy, explains Geraldine Anderson, head of group training at Planet Fitness. If you’re doing it right, you’re pushing or pulling, resisting, returning to the starting position with precision, and staying aligned the whole time.
By the end of the class, you’re shaking because those deep stabiliser muscles have worked hard.
Despite its growing popularity, several misconceptions around reformer Pilates still prevail.

Part of the reformer Pilates boom comes from exhaustion, emotional and physical. People are tired of workouts that leave them injured, inflamed, or mentally drained.
Wellness trends have started moving toward what experts call “mindful movement”: exercise that strengthens the body without overwhelming the nervous system.
It is why conversations around cortisol management, somatic healing, mobility training, and nervous system regulation are now flooding TikTok wellness spaces and gym studios alike.
Unlike high-intensity workouts that often prioritise speed and calorie burn, reformer Pilates slows people down. Breathing matters. Alignment matters. Control matters.
If you’ve ever walked past a Pilates studio and thought it looked like a mix between a spa and a medieval torture chamber, you aren’t alone. But behind those sliding carriages and springs is one of the most effective workouts you can do.

1. "It’s just fancy stretching"
Fact: Prepare to shake.
If you think it’s easy, you’re likely missing the point. Reformer Pilates is deceptively hard strength training. It’s all about resistance and precision. By the time you’re done, your muscles will be quivering because you’ve activated those deep "stabiliser" muscles you didn’t even know you had.
2. "It doesn’t build 'real' strength"
Fact: It builds "life" strength.
Lifting a heavy dumbbell is great, but life happens in 3D. The Reformer challenges your muscles while they’re lengthening, which translates to functional strength. It’s the kind of power that helps you lug heavy groceries, hop out of a low car, or, most importantly, keep your balance after stepping on a stray Lego.
3. "It’s only for dancers or flexible people"
Fact: It’s for anyone with a body.
You don’t need to be able to touch your toes to start. Whether you’re a pro athlete, a weightlifter who’s stiff as a board, or a grandparent wanting to stay mobile, the Reformer finds the "gaps" in your fitness and fills them. It's the ultimate "fix-it" workout.
4. "The machine looks like a trap
Fact: It’s actually your best friend.
The reformer might look intimidating, but those springs are there to support you. They take the load off your joints so you can get a killer workout without the impact. Think of it like learning to drive: it feels like a lot of moving parts at first, but once you click that "seatbelt," everything just flows.
5. "I need to get in shape before I try it"
Fact: Beginners often see the fastest results.
You don’t need a baseline level of fitness to walk through the door. Because the springs are adjustable, every single move can be modified to your current level. This is exactly why it’s the go-to for both elite athletes and people recovering from injuries.
6. "It won’t help me lose weight"
Fact: It’s a secret weapon for your metabolism.
While it’s not a high-intensity cardio class that leaves you gasping for air, it builds lean muscle. Muscle is "metabolically active," meaning the more of it you have, the more calories your body burns while you’re just sitting on the couch watching Netflix.
7. "The results are too subtle to notice"
The reality: It changes how you move through the world.
The transformation isn't just about a toned core (though that's a nice perk). It’s about the "hidden" wins:
