More than 10 000 motorists in KwaZulu-Natal have been charged with offences including speeding since December 1 with 234 nabbed for drunk driving over the past weekend.
This is according to statistics released KZN Transport MEC Siboniso Duma. He said the province had seen a decrease in the number of road fatalities compared to the same period in 2024.
“We commend our energised team from the Road Traffic Inspectorate for their visibility throughout the corners of the province. We thank the National Minister Barbara Creecy for augmenting the #NenzaniLaEzweni Operation with a deployment of National Traffic Police. The Road Traffic Inspectorate, National Traffic Police, traffic officers from municipalities, and the South African Police Service have been rolling out operations since the 1st of December.”
In KZN operations:
Speaking on the weekend drunk driving arrests, Duma said a municipal manager was among other professionals, including a doctor, nurse and attorney who were arrested.
Duma said: “The No Nonsense RTI team has arrested 2163 motorists for drunk driving since 15 August. The #NenzaniLaEzweni Operation has been augmented by the deployment of National Traffic Police with the support from SAPS and traffic officers from municipalities.”
