Gauteng taxi owner wounded in shooting in KZN, wife killed

DURBAN - The chairperson of the Witwatersrand African Taxi Association (WATA), Shandu Mbatha, was shot and wounded yesterday in a shooting in the Nkomokazini area in Estcourt.

Mbatha’s wife was killed in the shooting while two other passengers were injured.

The incident was confirmed by police spokesperson Colonel Thembeka Mbele.

“A man came to the Winterton Police Station driving a vehicle with injured people and informed the police that while he was driving along Nkomokazini area in Amangwe with his family, he was attacked by unknown people.”

Mbele said the man alleged that the suspects opened fire, fatally wounding his 55-year-old wife and injuring him and two passengers.

“The injured victims were rushed to hospital for medical attention. The motive for the killing is unknown.”

Mbele added that charges of murder and attempted murder were opened for investigation at Amangwe Police Station.

In December, the Daily News reported that a taxi owner and bodyguard was killed in a drive-by shooting on North Beach Road in uMdloti.

In November, a taxi owner and a member of the Pinetown Taxi Association was shot and killed in a gun battle in Pinetown.

In that incident, the police said a black Mercedes was driving up Bamboo Lane in Pinetown when it was ambushed by assailants who were travelling in an unknown silver vehicle.

“A gun battle ensued and the black Mercedes hit the wall on Windsor Road and the driver, an unidentified 53-year-old man, was shot by the occupants of the silver vehicle. He sustained multiple gunshot wounds to the head and face,” the police said.
