Re-surfaced Zwartkop is back with a bang

Published

Zwartkop Raceway will be back in action on Saturday, May 26 with car and motorcycle racing in a 20-event programme, after a five-week break for resurfacing the track.

The Super Saloons

will top the bill with the big V8s of Willie Hepburn, Corne Uys, Terry Wilford, Ben van der Westhuizen, Mark and Jonathan du Toit and Peter du Toit's Chev Camaro.

The V8s will be challenged by the super-fast rotary-engined Mazda MX6 of Anton Brits; expect plenty of action from a 25-car field.

The Silvercup

class has more than 35 entries with a huge array of machinery in all shapes and sizes - including a rumoured return by Dawie Olivier in a new car.

Veteran Ben Morgenrood will be challenged in the Trans-Am

class by the now-sorted, ex-Hans Stuck BMW Alpina, driven by Mike O'Sullivan, while young Stuart Greig has taken over the Zwartkops Camaro.

Peter du Toit will be at the wheel of a rebuilt Camaro and either Michele Lupini or Willie Hepburn will drive the Penkse-replica Camaro.

Formula GTi

have a full grid of about 20 cars, with Craig Shelley, Rod Johnston and Chris Vermaak heading the premier league while the B category will be contested by at least eight drivers.

The Lotus Challenge

is not for little men in little cars - it takes big ones to fling these "four-wheeled motorcycles" around the tight Zwartkop circuit in 65 seconds or less. Watch out for front runners Klippies Krige, Clive Wilmot and James Forbes.

The Sports Racing Association

cars will make all the right noises - and deliver superb racing - with Cobras, Nardinis and TVRs in the field while the Alfa Trofeo

has attracted about 25 Alfas of varying models.

The domination of the CitiGolfs in the SuperHatch

category is finally under threat with Fords and Opels getting the upper hand; Brad Woolley's Ford Laser is now the one to beat for line honours while diminutive Robyn Kruger will show the Class B boys how it's done.

Finally, but by no means least, the Thunderbike Challenge

will see some 35 big, powerful motorcycles on the grid - all focusing on Garth Zoutendyk, who's still the man to beat.

- Racing will start at 10am and there will be 20 events on the programmes; entry is R40 for adults, R20 for student and kids under 12 get in free. For more information call (012) 374-5802
