The KwaZulu-Natal Sharks Board has warned residents of the Bluff not to enter the water around Cave Rock after residents saw a huge shark there.

Local community safety website Bluff Stuff sent out a warning after a resident watched the shark from his house above Cave Rock and said it was the biggest he had ever seen.

The resident said that at one stage, the shark had become aggressive and jumped out of the water.

“Sometimes sharks hang around a spot for a few days, so it would be wise to be cautious.

“The shark was well inside the nets, so don’t think that because there are nets at Anstey’s (beach) that you are safe,” the resident warned.

The resident was not sure what type of shark it was, but it was brown on the top and bottom.

Yesterday Michael Anderson-Reade of the KwaZulu-Natal Sharks Board said he was not aware of the incident, but urged members of the public not to go to Cave Rock. He said Cave Rock was usually used as a surfing area.

Anderson-Reade said it could be a ragged-tooth shark which was goldish brown on the top.

“But the ragged-tooth shark is not capable of launching itself out of the water. Maybe it was the spinner shark or the copper shark, which is normally spotted during the sardine season.”

He said that since summer was approaching, there were a number of shark species that were active. “People must use beaches that are protected. Next to Cave Rock there is Brighton Beach and Anstey’s Beach and they are both protected for bathing,” Anderson-Reade said.
