The state is trying to get Dlamini-Gcabashe admitted at the Pietermaritzburg Fort Napier Hospital for mental observation after a psychiatrist at the Madadeni Provincial Hospital failed to give a clear diagnosis of his mental state.
The man who claims to be the late maskandi musician, Mgqumeni Khumalo, has been referred to a Pietermaritzburg mental institution for further mental observation.
On Tuesday, Sibusiso John Dlamini-Gcabashe, 29, appeared at the Nquthu Magistrate’s Court on charges of fraud and perjury.
Dlamini-Gcabashe claims he is Mgqumeni Khumalo who died two years ago in Johannesburg.
The state had suggested that Dlamini-Gcabashe go for a mental observation after his first court appearance last week, however psychiatrists failed to give the state a clear mental diagnosis.
A psychiatrist at the Madadeni Provincial Hospital in Amajuba district suggested that Dlamini-Gcabashe be admitted to the Fort Napier Hospital.
On Tuesday, the public gallery was packed as court officials allowed members of the public to enter the court to listen to court proceedings.
Prosecutor Sam Mpungose, said the psychiatrist, who conducted the mental evaluation did not give a clear indication on the suspect’s mental state.
The report, Mpungose said, had been discussed with the state and Dlamini-Gcabashe’s legal representative.
‘Sees things’
“The only thing that the psychiatrist got from him was that he sees things that nobody else can see. Therefore, the psychiatrist suggested that he be sent to Fort Napier,” he said.
Mpungose said he had also discussed Dlamini-Gcabashe’s bail application with his attorney Senzo Mhlongo.
They both agreed that the bail application should not be carried out until the mental observation had been completed.
The matter was adjourned to March 6.
