Parents and teachers have requested that the Gauteng Department of Education reinstate corporal punishment.

This comes after an assault on a male teacher by a Grade 8 pupil at Glenvista High School, in the south of Johannesburg, last week.

Footage of the incident that was taken by a fellow pupil shows the pupil, who may have been on drugs, attacking a male teacher with a broom after a scuffle over his backpack.

On the Gauteng Department of Education Facebook page the angst revealed itself in posts from teachers who shared their views about the incident.
