Former Proteas captain Graeme Smith and his wife, Morgan Deane, are to divorce.

The couple were married three years ago and have two children – a daughter, Cadence Christine Smith, who was born on July 25, 2012 and Carter McMorrin Smith, who was born on July 15, 2013.

David Becker, on behalf of the couple, confirmed that they were divorcing. “I confirm that Graeme and Morgan are unfortunately divorcing. This is obviously a private matter and the couple would ask that their privacy is respected during this time, both for the sake of themselves and their children.”

Deane, who is Irish, is a pop singer.

Smith married Deane in Cape Town in August 2011. The left-handed opener played 117 Test matches for South Africa and retired last March at Newlands.

On cue, the news of the pending split had tweeters weighing in.

@Chriseldalewis: “Can Graeme Smith and his wife reconcile please. We are already dealing with too much in SA.”

@mtyala: “Graeme Smith and his Irish wife hit Splitsville. Can’t say I’m surprised. Bifff had a few more years to play for SA.”

@Percyoung: “This Graeme Smith story is taking my attention away from a very important #SONADebate. I can’t believe it.”
