Crime Stats: Robberies increase in Umlazi

Durban - Robbery with aggravating circumstances is on the increase in the uMlazi policing precinct south of Durban. 

This was revealed when the South African Police Service briefed the Portfolio Committee on Police (PCOP) on the 2018/19 annual crime statistics in Parliament. 

uMlazi is one of KwaZulu-Natal's biggest townships. 

The statistics are for all crime reported for the period between 1 April 2018 to 31 March 2019.

The country heard statistics of crimes such as murder, sexual offences, attempted murder, assault with the intent to inflict grievous bodily harm, common 

assault, common robbery and robbery with aggravating circumstances.

According to the crime states presented on uMlazi robbery with aggravating circumstances jumped from 781 to 846 reported cases. The highest in seven years. 

The other crimes which impacted on the suburb were 

- Murder had decreased by 43 from 223 to 180 reported incidents.

- Sexual offences decreased since 481 offences were reported in 2009/2010. During 2017/2018, 290 cases were reported and 301 in 2018/2019. An increase of 11.

- Common assaults increased by 20 reported cases from 675 to 695. 

- Rape increased by 10 to 262 reported cases in 2018/2019. In 2009/2010 a total of 410 incidents were reported.

- Car-jackings saw a minor decrease of three reported cases to 147 

- House robbery decreased by 31 from 133 to 102 reported cases 

-Burglary down from 769 to 656 

-Shoplifting decreased from 335 to 235
