A PETRUSVILLE woman, Katrina Lumkwana, has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for the fatal stabbing of her partner, Freek Witbooi, in an incident that initially began as a case of attempted murder.
According to Northern Cape police spokesperson Sergeant Molefi Shemane, the tragic event unfolded on the evening of Tuesday, May 21, 2024. The 38-year-old Lumkwana stabbed Witbooi in the stomach during an apparent domestic altercation.
Witbooi was rushed to hospital with critical injuries, and Lumkwana was arrested on charges of attempted murder.
However, the case took a grim turn when Witbooi succumbed to his injuries on Saturday, June 8, 2024. This led to the charge being upgraded to murder, setting the stage for a trial that underscored the devastating consequences of domestic violence.
The Philipstown Magistrate’s Court handed down the sentence on March 6.
The Northern Cape provincial commissioner, Lieutenant-General Koliswa Otola, commended the relentless efforts of Detective Constable Johnny Nell and the State prosecutor for their dedication in securing the conviction.
