Noordhoek's vibrant art scene will be on display on Saturday March 15 and Sunday March 16 as the Noordhoek Open Art Studios (NOS) opens 21 studios featuring 27 local artists.
This annual event offers visitors a unique opportunity to explore artists' creative spaces, watch their processes in action, and purchase artwork directly from them, all while enjoying a variety of artworks from 10am to 5pm each day.
The event, which started in 1990 as a monthly gathering by Hazel Anderson, ran until 2001 before being revived in 2019 as an annual showcase.
"NOS has always been about community and coming together as art lovers and community members," said committee member Rebecca Lane.
"We love that visitors get to experience our beloved Noordhoek and the community spirit. NOS is always evolving, welcoming new artists and fresh energy, so there’s always something new to discover alongside old favourites," said Ms Lane.
For artist Gavin Thomson, inspiration is everywhere.
"Everything inspires you; it's just about looking at the world in a certain way," he said.
"One of the amazing things about Open Studios is that people get to come in and see where all the work — and the play — happens. There’s a mystery around artists and what they do all day, so it’s great to demystify that. Plus, there’s something for everyone, from young to old," Mr Thomson added.
First-time participant Pippa Williams is excited to share her work and process with visitors.
"I always carry a small sketchbook around and make quick sketches of vistas or details that interest me. Back in the studio, I translate them into paintings using colours that impacted me at the time," she said.
"I’ve been exploring mountains and boulders in Cape Town, while in Portugal, it was the cliffs and seascapes. I hope visitors enjoy seeing my work in its home environment and form a deeper emotional connection to it," said Ms Williams.
Kayleigh Wogerbauer, known for her expressive portraits, described art as her sanctuary.
"Art inspires me daily; it’s a place where I can just be. I can’t think of anything else but what I’m doing—it’s an escape where I can express my life journey," she said.
"You can expect to see lots of faces at my open studio. People always ask what I paint, and the answer is always the same—a face. So much can be said in the features of a face," she added.
Visitors can explore the studios at their own pace with a range of ticket options available for purchase at Noordhoek Art Point or at the studios on the event days.
Tickets start at R20 for a Studio Pass, with day and weekend passes also available. Pensioners receive a discount, and entry is free for students and children.
For families, workshops designed for children will also be available, though pre-booking is essential.
All ticket sales go directly to Masi Sports, helping secure the future of art education at Ukhanyo Primary School and funding internships for aspiring art educators.
