Manenberg police’s integrated law enforcement operations have led to the arrest of a 27-year-old man, who is the alleged leader of a local gang.

The man was arrested on Wednesday March 26 for several charges of murder and attempted murder within Heideveld.

According to Manenberg SAPS spokesperson, Captain Ian Bennett, the man was the “most wanted and feared gang leader” in the precinct.

“Manenberg SAPS has a daily integrated deployment of law enforcement to combat crime within the hot spots of the precinct. This integrated deployment is additional to the crime prevention team which is tasked to do stop and searches, execute search warrants and do high-density patrols to break the back of violent gang behaviour."

According to Captain Bennett, the man had been "instrumental" in orchestrating hits on opposing gangs "to gain territory and become prominent in the gang world".

On the same day, the crime prevention unit and Cape Town public order unit arrested a 26-year-old man from Tambo Village for the possession of 1 000 mandrax tablets, with a street value of about R100 000.

“The officers executed a search warrant in Jenny Street, Tambo Village.

When police searched the back of the main house, the man dropped the bag he was carrying and tried to flee. Officers cornered him, searched the bag and found 1 000 mandrax tablets packed in small plastic bags, Captain Bennett said.

Later that day, an 18-year-old was arrested in Sneeuberg Road, Heideveld, for the illegal possession of a 9mm pistol with 10 rounds of ammunition.

Colonel Harry Brickles, acting station commander of Manenberg SAPS, commended the crime prevention team and encouraged the community to become active in crime prevention by reporting criminal activity.

Anyone with information on criminal activity can contact Manenberg SAPS at 021 699 9400 or Crime Stop at 08600 10111.
