THERE’S nothing more exciting than the roar of a high-performance vehicle’s engine and tyres spinning for Sandiswa Zondi, a 24-year-old student with Mangosuthu University of Technology.

Zondi, who is pursuing an advanced diploma in marketing, and a brand ambassador for MUT, will combine her academic prowess with her love for cars during an automotive event for students at MUT’s uMlazi campus today.

The Gas Motorshow's activation will happen at the Mangosuthu University of Technology on Thursday.

The organisers of Gas Motorshow, one of the country’s leading automotive and lifestyle events that churns out high-octane entertainment and diverse cultural experiences, will stage the activation event at MUT to give students a feel for the automotive industry.

The Gas Motorshow is due to be held at Suncoast Casino on June 14 and 15,

Zondi is expected to be in the thick of today’s action, where she will interview students to glean their views on the activation event and she is expected to flood MUT’s social media sites with posts the happenings.

“I am excited about the event and I love providing students with wonderful activities and getting their feedback.”

She said she was chuffed about her decision to study marketing.

“I have chosen well, it is a bit taxing to study from home this year because, unlike living at the campus residence previously, I'm also required to do household duties,” said the Pietermaritburg-based student.

She has always had an interest in cars, especially the old-school jobbies.

Exciting for her are the spinning sessions, when rubber is burned and engines are on a high rev.

“That’s really cool. Loud engines, old school cars. I love them.

“I also like fast-driving, and I would also like the opportunity to burn some rubber in a spinning session.

“But I advocate for such activities to be done in a safe environment.”

Zondi said motor shows present safe environments and that is where such extreme activities can be performed by professionals.

“People certainly should not be getting up to such tricks on public roads or spaces, it's a danger to everyone. Besides, we have high accident rates in this country.

“Safety must always be of premium importance,” she emphasised.

Zondi said she was eager to learn more about motor sport and pleased about the collaboration between MUT and Gas Motorshow.

“Our students will get the opportunity to participate in some of the show’s activities and win prizes, including tickets to the show,” she said.

Yasmeetha Ori, Gas Motorshows spokesperson, said their decision to partner with MUT was driven by a shared commitment to youth empowerment and transformation.

“One of our core objectives is to create greater access and visibility for black women within the automotive industry, whether as a career path or a personal passion. We believe in providing platforms that encourage exploration, creativity, and participation in a space that has traditionally lacked diversity.

“We believe that the automotive industry holds the power to shape the future—offering not only innovation but also significant opportunities for employment, entrepreneurship, and socio-economic upliftment,” said Ori.
