In a groundbreaking initiative, Halisi Afrique is poised to make history at this year’s Hollywoodbets Durban July by becoming the first marquee to spotlight traditional Maskandi music at the illustrious race day event.

Set against the backdrop of the 2025 theme, “Marvels of Mzansi,” this momentous collaboration, in partnership with the Durban July Amabhinca Hospitality, seeks to honour South Africa’s cultural richness.

Historically, the Durban July has been synonymous with cosmopolitan glamour, a gathering often favoured by elite circles.

However, Halisi Afrique is changing the narrative by placing one of South Africa’s most cherished musical genres in the spotlight. Maskandi, affectionately known as the “Zulu blues,” which resonates deeply with isiZulu identity, weaving together elements of storytelling and rhythm.

This year, the soulful tunes of Maskandi will fill the air in the Halisi Afrique marquee, a setting updated with elegance and flair.

Attendees can anticipate an electrifying array of performances featuring renowned Maskandi artist Mthandeni “Igcokama Elisha,” along with the amapiano sensation Mawhoo, kwaito icon Mdu Masilela, house music aficionado DJ Merlon, and an assortment of surprise acts. This eclectic line-up promises a thrilling fusion of traditional and contemporary sounds reflective of Mzansi's diverse musical landscape.

Phindile Zulu, Director of Halisi Afrique, noted, “This is more than a musical performance; it’s a cultural statement. We are bridging worlds; blending traditional heritage with luxury lifestyle to show that Maskandi belongs not only in rural homesteads but also on prestigious stages like the Durban July.”

Lindani Gumede, Director at Fast and Quick Consulting, the minds behind the Durban July Amabhinca Concept, echoed these sentiments, saying, “This collaboration will be exciting as two worlds collide to form a new great experience. We, as the Amabhinca nation, always wanted to be part of the Durban July without filtering our culture. We finally have our new home at the Hollywood Bets Durban July. We highly appreciate Halisi Afrique for letting us collaborate with them in this newly established journey.”

Guests at the Halisi Afrique marquee can expect a uniquely curated experience, with Maskandi artists donning modern interpretations of traditional attire, performing amid lavish Afrocentric décor, haute cuisine, and top-tier hospitality. This initiative aspires not only to entertain but also to honour and elevate Maskandi music as an integral part of Mzansi’s cultural tapestry.

By embracing Maskandi, Halisi Afrique is steadfast in its mission to host experiential events that showcase the vibrancy and depth of South Africa. This significant move calls upon other industry players to redefine what prestige and representation should embody within lifestyle and entertainment sectors.

Join us at the Halisi Afrique Marquee on 5 July 2025 at the Hollywoodbets Greyville Racecourse for an unprecedented celebration of culture, where tradition intersects with innovation. This is an event where “The Halisi Experience featuring Amabhinca: Where culture, elegance, and celebration converge.”
