Over the years the school fostered a reputation of developing young minds who have in turn grown to be valuable contributors to society.

Apart from academic and sporting highs the school has achieved in the past, the buildings and structures has been declared a heritage site, which also emphasised its historical importance to the Durban landscape

As a tribute to the 120 year legacy, the school's principal, Bheki Shandu, highlighted the institution's profound impact on generations of learners during a birthday celebration event held at its premises yesterday.

“This milestone is a living testament to perseverance, dedication, and transformation,” Shandu said, reflecting on the school’s journey from its humble beginnings to its current standing as a thriving community centre.

Founded in 1905 by Ms. A Crowder, the school has always valued academic excellence and character building.

Shandu reiterated the importance of paying homage to the visionaries whose dedication laid the foundations of the school.

“Their belief in the power of education ignited a spark that has continued to burn for over a century,” he noted, expressing heartfelt gratitude for past principals, teachers, staff members, and leaders whose tireless efforts have shaped the institution's legacy.

“Whether you pursued careers in science, the arts, business, education, or service, you are the living proof of what this institution stands for: excellence, integrity, and impact,” he said proudly.

Shandu reminded pupils that their journey requires discipline, practice, and resilience, stating, “Progress is the child of discipline, the product of practice, and the reward for resilience.”

About the future, Shandu shared the school's vision to expand its curriculum to cater to the evolving needs of the new generation.

He pointed out that technology, particularly artificial intelligence, was occupying every educational space and that decisive investments in technology, sustainability, and mental health resources are necessary for comprehensive growth.

“We are reaffirming our commitment to inclusion, compassion, and the core mission of education to prepare young people not just for careers, but for life.

“Let this anniversary remind us of all that schools are not just buildings.

“It’s a moment to honour the dedication of generations of learners, teachers, parents, and staff who have shaped the school’s legacy. Celebrating 120 years fills everyone with joy and motivation to continue building a strong, inclusive, and forward-looking school where every learner can thrive. It’s both a celebration of the past and a hopeful step toward an even brighter future”.
