Emergency rescue teams are currently searching for the pilot of a light aircraft that crashed at Ushaka Beach on Thursday afternoon.

The incident occurred at approximately 1:45 P, as the aircraft was performing its final routine during an airshow at North Beach.

The South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA) confirmed the details of the crash, stating that their Accident and Incident Investigations Division (AIID) has taken charge of the investigation to determine the circumstances that led to the accident.

Poppy Khoza, the Director of SACAA, expressed deep concern and announced the commencement of an extensive investigation.

“The airshow took place after the most successful Next Generation of Aviation Professionals (NGAP) Global Summit 2025,” Khoza said.

Kwazulu-Natal’s MEC for Transport, Siboniso Duma, who witnessed the concerted effort of the rescue teams on the scene, extended his condolences to the families of the missing pilot.

“Our hearts and thoughts are with the families of the pilots,” he said.

Duma urged for patience and support as the rescue teams and the AIID conduct their critical work, emphasising the importance of allowing these teams the space needed to proceed effectively.

The incident occurred just days after the province had hosted Minister of Transport Barbra Creecy along with over 1,000 delegates at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre, where discussions surrounding the future of the aviation industry were ongoing.

As a precautionary measure, the eThekwini Municipality has confirmed the closure of Battery Beach due to the crash.

Local authorities stated that emergency services, including search and rescue teams, were actively responding to the situation and will continue to monitor ongoing developments.
