The journey of Michell Naik-Rashid is a powerful testament to resilience, reinvention, and the relentless drive to uplift not only herself but also the community.

Naik-Rashid started her working career as a receptionist at a medical practice in Pinetown, Durban. However, her determination propelled her in the healthcare industry.

Ultimately, after learning the ropes of the industry, her passion for wellness transformed into a thriving business. Initially, Naik-Rashid spent 13 years mastering the ins and outs of medical operations before becoming a practice manager and accounts administrator.

A pivotal time in her life was when she married Muhammad Sufain Rashid, an entrepreneur whose vision and support inspired her to explore the realm of business ownership. “Armed with a diploma in Sports Science and Nutrition, my passion for health, nutrition, and empowering women took flight in 2019 when I purchased my first branch of The Firm Musgrave,” Naik-Rashid recalled, reflecting on the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic that emerged shortly after her bold venture. Despite the hardships, her unwavering determination and familial support saw her through.

As of 2024, she is not only the owner of The Firm but also serves as the franchisor, leading an ambitious expansion plan that includes locations in Durban, Johannesburg, and Cape Town.

Naik-Rashid has aligned her brand with fitness giants Planet Fitness gyms by positioning The Firm's clinics within their premises. The flagship venture was launched at Westville's Westwood Mall, and she now has aspirations to expand her clinic's footprint to all 49 Planet Fitness locations across South Africa.

“My mission is rooted in empowerment that encourages both the younger and older women to take control of their health and confidence,” she said passionately.

Guided by her purpose, Naik-Rashid emphasises the necessity of supporting women through their wellness journeys, not just physically but also emotionally and mentally, which would ultimately redefine their self-image.

Naik-Rashid speaks candidly about the challenges female leaders often face. “Despite the skills we bring to the table, women usually have to work twice as hard to earn respect in leadership roles,” she said, reflecting on the moments she felt overlooked or underestimated.

But she harnessed those lows as motivation to build credibility through results, consistency, and integrity. “I might not have been given respect easily, but I’ve carved out my place by creating something that speaks for itself,” she reiterated.

Understanding that leadership is often shrouded in gendered expectations, she advocated for breaking through stereotypes, advising women to focus on their vision and resist being swayed by doubt, either external or self-imposed.

The introduction of their first flagship clinic within a fitness centre exemplifies a commitment to a holistic approach to health. “It's a bold move, reflective of both our brand evolution and the industry's trajectory,” she noted.

When the hustle of entrepreneurship becomes overwhelming, Naik-Rashid finds solace in family. “Spending quality time with them, whether sharing a meal or enjoying each other's company, recharges me,” she admits.

Her desire to give back manifests in charity work directed towards the less fortunate, while she also invests time in personal wellness through exercise, exploring healthy recipes, and staying abreast of nutrition trends.

“Quiet moments are precious,” Naik-Rashid adds.

“I cherish reading and reflecting to maintain my spiritual and mental grounding. Balance is imperative, and nurturing oneself outside of work is as crucial as what you accomplish in business.”
