In a dramatic encounter in the early hours of Monday, KwaZulu-Natal police were engaged in a shootout that resulted in the deaths of five suspects who are believed to be linked to a range of criminal activities in the Durban area.

Police spokesperson Robert Netshiunda provided details on the intelligence driven operation that led officers to Chatsworth, where the confrontation unfolded.

Police had been tracking the suspects in connection with a series of violent crimes committed across the Mpumalanga township, Mariannhill, and uMsunduzi areas, including murder, house robberies, and extortion. As officers moved in to arrest the suspected criminals, the situation escalated rapidly.

“When police arrived on the scene, the suspects opened fire at them, and that’s when the shootout ensued,” Netshiunda explained.

The ensuing gun battle was intense, but the police successfully neutralised the threat posed by the group.

“Five suspects were shot and fatally wounded, and we are pleased that none of the officers were injured during the incident,” he added.

Over recent months, police have ramped up their operations in response to rising concerns over gang-related violence and other forms of crime that have been plaguing local residents.

Netshiunda reiterated the Sap's commitment to protecting the public, and stated that the operation was part of a broader strategy to dismantle criminal networks that have been terrorising communities.
