Viksit Bharat Run 2025: Celebrating Service and Community in Durban

The scenic setting at Durban's Suncoast Beach lawn area was transformed into a vibrant hub of activity as the Consulate General of India hosted a 5km Viksit Bharat Run 2025 on Saturday.

Embracing the theme “Run to Serve the Nation,” the event welcomed participants from the Indian diaspora, local communities, students, professionals, and friends of India, all united in their commitment to the vision of a Viksit Bharat by 2047.

Viksit Bharat 2047 is the Indian government's vision to be classified a completely "developed nation" in 2047, to coincide with country's 100th anniversary of independence.

The run marked a significant highlight of the Seva Pakhwada, a fortnight dedicated to the virtues of service and shared responsibility, also referred to asSeva Parv.

This period promotes civic participation and community service, with various activities organised in India and globally to celebrate the spirit of Seva Bhav. This year, the run was celebrated across more than 150 cities worldwide, echoing the call to action with its motto.

The day's festivities kicked off, with Consul General Dr Thelma John David administering the Viksit Bharat pledge to all attendees, reinforcing their individual and collective responsibilities towards nation-building. Participants were encouraged to engage more deeply with India through the MYBharat portal, which offers opportunities for experiential learning and connection with their homeland.

Adding a competitive spirit to the day, trophies and prizes were awarded to the top three finishers across various categories (men, ladies, and youth under-16), which was an acknowledgement of their accomplishments, commitment to fitness and community engagement.

Included in the day's list of activities were some cultural performances, which showcased the deep cultural ties between India and South Africa. Spectators enjoyed soulful renditions of patriotic songs that stirred national pride and unity among the diverse audience.

As one of India’s largest global outreach initiatives, the Viksit Bharat Run 2025 embodied more than just a fitness event; it was a global celebration of values of Seva Bhav, sustainability and  inclusivity.

The event also aimed to bolster connections between India and its diaspora but also to mobilise youth towards service-oriented projects and present India’s growth story to the world.

In an era where community and service are pivotal to personal and national development, Saturday's event served as a testament to the power of collective action in pursuing a greater purpose.
