In the heart of Durban, the remarkable educational success of Makabongwe Pre-School stands proud, having evolved from modest beginnings into a thriving pillar of hope for the local community. This week marked 30 years of existence for the school that has operated its premises on Johan Nkosi (formerly Alice) Street.
As a regular contributor of essential products to the school, a team from the Daily News joined in the facility's milestone celebration yesterday. The school originally opened its doors to 14 children from homeless families and vendors who faced significant challenges in providing care for their little ones. Current principal Kate Baker, Makabongwe's has sustained the school's growth trajectory as an institution of inspiration.

From humble beginnings, Makabongwe has since blossomed into a vibrant institution nurturing nearly 180 bright young minds presently, all placed into 6 classrooms, making it a sanctuary for learning and aspirations.
Baker, who has devoted 18 years to education and is in her fourth year at Makabongwe, shared her passion for teaching and her commitment to uplifting those around her when a team from the Daily News visited the facility yesterday.
“It’s a job I cherish,” she said. “I feel so blessed to witness the spirit of community among our donors and sponsors.” This spirit was palpably evident during a recent event where volunteers dedicated their time to celebrate the children, fostering a joyful atmosphere that Baker describes as heartwarming.
However, as with many educational institutions, achieving financial stability remains a substantial challenge. Baker stated: “Raising funds is a big aspect of our operations,” emphasising the crucial need for resources to maintain the school's staff complement and to provide essential supplies ranging from learning materials to nutrition. “I’m confident in our ability to move forward, but sustainable funding is crucial,” she adds optimistically.

Jessica Williams, chairperson of the school's governing body, echoed Baker’s sentiments and highlighted the school’s extraordinary journey. “It’s quite incredible how the school has grown from starting with just a handful of children to nearly 180 now.
"This success is attributed to divine guidance and unwavering support from the community, including corporate and private individuals,” she noted, and recalled the uncertainty they navigated along the way.
While the current facilities do not allow for further numerical expansion, Williams envisions Makabongwe as a template for future educational efforts.
“We aim to continue providing quality education to marginalised communities. Early Childhood Development (ECD) is crucial, and we’ve already seen our pupils excel, with some becoming lawyers and social workers,” she said with pride.
Both Baker and Williams acknowledged the vital support from the Department of Social Development and the Department of Education, which provided essential subsidies. Still, they firmly stated that the majority of their funding stemmed from various fundraising initiatives driven by the community's generosity and resilience.

Daily News Milk Fund CSI manager and project coordinator Sameera Kareem said Makabongwe was one of the 99 beneficiaries who have been a part of the fund's family, and benefited from the simple, vital gift of milk and porridge for the past 11 years.
Kareem also said it was a heartwarming experience watching Makabongwe grow and thrive, which illustrated the powerful truth that consistent care can unlock immense potential. “Their achievement isn't just a milestone; it's a profound reminder of the hope that fuels this initiative. We look forward to standing by them for many years more,” Kareem said.
