In a groundbreaking initiative aimed at enhancing Africa's stature within the global media landscape, the inaugural African Media Awards will take place in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
This prestigious event recognises outstanding journalistic and storytelling excellence from across the continent. It showcases the diverse narratives that encapsulate African experiences.
The African Media Awards have been organised by a formidable consortium of Pan-African institutions, including the African Union of Broadcasting, the Patrice Emery Lumumba Foundation, and several others, each dedicated to promoting and preserving African legacies and narratives.
Together, they aim to shine a light on the exceptional achievements in media, encompassing both traditional outlets and innovative digital platforms.
With nine distinct categories, the awards have been structured to reflect the evolving nature of media in Africa:
To be eligible for consideration, entries must have first aired in 2024 or later, ensuring that the awards reflect the most contemporary and relevant storytelling methods and themes.
The top three entries in each category will be invited to a glittering gala ceremony, with the organisers covering all travel and hotel accommodation expenses to celebrate their accomplishments.
In recognition of their hard work and creativity, all nominees will receive a $2,000 cash prize and complimentary travel arrangements. Much like the Oscars of the media world, the winners in each category will receive the coveted "Golden Alkebulan" trophy, along with a $6,000 cash prize.
This prestigious accolade represents not just personal achievement but also the rich heritage and future ambitions of African media.
The awards are an open invitation to media organisations, television channels, bloggers, and independent content creators across Africa, welcoming all who wish to share their innovative explorations and compelling stories.
By fostering African-led narratives, the African Media Awards aim to reinvigorate global discourse with perspectives that inspire, inform, and resonate.
