Even more bizarre than the result was Senegalese footballer Indrissa Gueye slapping his Everton teammate Michael Keane during an English Premiership match against hosts Manchester United.
Gueye was red-carded in the 13th minute of the encounter played at Old Trafford after he and Keane had a "moment of madness" in their own penalty area.
United captain Bruno Fernandes had fired a shot just wide of the target after latching onto a ball just outside the Everton penalty area. Gueye and Keane haggled over an errant pass that led to the Fernandes goal attempt.
In spite of having the advantage of an extra player on the pitch, United's players seemed to be more affected by the sending-off and were unable to establish coherency in their play.
Everton, on the other hand, showed better composure, especially in defensive situations, and at times, it was hard to tell they were at a numerical disadvantage.
When the opportunity arrived for Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall in the 29th minute to have a strike at the United goal, he did so with aplomb and landed the game's only goal.
As expected, the home side made a more concerted effort in the second half to get back into the match. However, in the closing stages, Everton bagged a deserving three points.
Goalscorer Dewsbury-Hall, addressing the red-card incident, said Gueye had apologised. "It was just a moment of madness," he told Sky Sports.
"It was obviously avoidable. All I can say is Gueye apologised to us all at half-time and said his piece."
Former United boss Moyes, celebrating his first win at Old Trafford as a visiting manager at his 18th attempt, said he was "incredibly proud" of his players.
"We've come close a lot of times, but not quite been able to go over the line," he said. "But tonight, incredibly, we got over the line with 10 men, which was probably the hardest way to get a good result."
