Kariega, South Africa – In a bold reiteration of its commitment to sustainable manufacturing, Volkswagen Group Africa (VWGA) has successfully completed the second phase of its solar photovoltaic (PV) carport project at the Kariega manufacturing plant. This latest phase adds significant solar capacity to the already ambitious renewable energy initiative that began in 2022.

With an investment totalling R90 million, the solar project demonstrates VWGA’s proactive approach to integrating renewable energy into its operations. The first phase of the initiative culminated in 3.1 MWp of solar capacity, achieved through the installation of 5 712 solar panels by 2024. This initial step showcased the potential of the Kariega plant to harness solar energy effectively and laid the groundwork for further expansion.

The newly completed second phase, which brings an additional 2.1 MWp of capacity, comprises 3 582 new solar panels, each with a power output of 585W. This phase alone is expected to generate approximately 2 699 MWh of clean energy annually, only adding to the already impressive total of 7 125 MWh that both phases will collectively produce each year.

Ulrich Schwabe, Production Director at Volkswagen Group Africa, expressed enthusiasm about the project's progression, stating, “The completion of the second phase of our solar project marks another major milestone in our journey towards fully sustainable manufacturing. This shows our commitment to using cleaner energy and making our operations even more environmentally responsible.”

The significance of the project extends beyond mere energy generation. With the plant's total solar capacity now rising to 5.2 MWp, VWGA positions itself as a leader in the automotive sector's shift towards greener manufacturing practices, aiming towards carbon neutrality in production operations.

As the world increasingly turns its attention to renewable energy solutions, initiatives like the solar PV carport project at VWGA not only reflect the pressing need for sustainable practices but also set a commendable precedent for the entire industry. The Kariega plant's dual focus on innovation and environmental stewardship illustrates the potential for large-scale industries to harness renewable resources effectively.
