The Durban Chamber of Commerce and Industry NPC is gearing up for what it hopes will be a booming 2025 festive season, viewing the period not just as a holiday time but as a prime opportunity for the coastal city to showcase its wealth of assets and hospitality.

CEO Ms Palesa Phili expressed optimism about the impact the festive season could have on KwaZulu-Natal’s economy, especially following the challenges faced last year due to E. coli outbreaks. “This festive season is so much more than just the December holidays. It represents a vital opportunity for the region—helping to boost local GDP and attract both local and international visitors,” she said.

Reflecting on the improvements made in the region's infrastructure, Phili pointed out Mayor Cyril Xaba's confirmation that for the first time in five years, the city’s bulk water reservoirs are stable, with key treatment works operating at full capacity. This stability is expected to enhance the tourism experience, offering visitors peace of mind about their health and safety throughout their stay.

Adding to the festive spirit, plans are in place for over 2,000 officers to be deployed across eThekwini to bolster safety and security measures, promising visitors a secure environment to enjoy their holiday.

“We believe the progress in addressing critical infrastructure alongside efforts to enhance business confidence will play a significant role in attracting more visitors than ever before,” Phili added. The Chamber anticipates increased spending during the festive season, particularly in accommodation, transportation, restaurants, and entertainment—all vital sectors benefiting from holiday tourism.

The excitement doesn’t stop there. Phili urges residents and tourists alike to dive into the city's vibrant celebrations, ranging from thrilling sporting events and concerts to local markets and beautiful beach experiences. “Durban is truly alive with activity, and we warmly invite everyone to participate in the celebrations,” she enthused.

Despite acknowledging ongoing challenges, the outlook from the Durban Chamber of Commerce and Industry NPC remains bright. Phili affirms the Chamber’s commitment to creating a conducive environment for economic growth by advocating for policies that resonate well with businesses.

“We welcome all tourists, national and international, to Durban, KwaZulu-Natal a true playground of South Africa. Let this festive season be a memorable experience for all,” she said.
