As summer drapes its warm embrace over Durban, the bustling harbour comes alive with the captivating spirit of sailing.

Among the vibrant waves and laughter, sailor Minenhle Ngcobo, a Durban University of Technology student, has been making headlines when he recently led the DUT's team to a commendable bronze medal at the USSA Sailing Regatta.

With an impressive decade of sailing experience under his belt, Ngcobo has not only proven his prowess on the water but has also become a beacon of inspiration for the local sailing community.

"I am ecstatic that my team managed to secure the third position," said Ngcobo about the DUT's achievement in a tough competition.

The bronze medal was a cause for celebration, especially after an intense sailing season that saw him and his crew navigating both the challenges and the joys of competitive sailing. The Point Yacht Club is where Ngcobo and his team train.

He and his fellow sailors are now looking forward to a well-deserved break.

However, 2026 promises to be action-packed, with the announcement of the upcoming MSC Regatta in July on the horizon. "We will be participating in an offshore race next year," Ngcobo said, indicating their ongoing commitment to pushing boundaries during their sailing adventures.

Apart from their competitive endeavours in the coming year, the Point Yacht Club is set to welcome renowned round-the-world sailor Mark Sinclair, popularly known as Captain Coconut. Sinclair's experiences from two Golden Globe Races and one Ocean Globe Race will provide invaluable insights and inspiration.

Next year, the sailors of Durban will have another reason to celebrate, as the city has been selected as a stopping point for the Magnificent Queen Anne, which is due to sail into the harbour early in the new year.

This visit marks only one of two royal visits planned for 2026, with the prestigious Queen Mary 2 also scheduled to dock in Durban come April.

The local sailing community expects to create a stunning flotilla in honour of the majestic ships, truly showcasing the rich maritime culture of the region.
