A devastating road accident in Inkanyezini, near Lion Park just outside Pietermaritzburg, has resulted in the tragic deaths of three people two women and a man.
The incident occurred late on Tuesday evening, sending shockwaves through the community.
Emergency services, including ALS Paramedics and local police (SAPS), arrived at the scene shortly after 9:15 PM.
What they found was the harrowing aftermath of a single-vehicle collision.
Reports indicate that the vehicle lost control, crashing into a barrier and a water pump before veering off the road and plummeting into a nearby river.
In an extraordinary act of bravery, bystanders rushed into the swiftly flowing waters to assist. Their efforts led to the rescue of two young women, believed to be in their twenties and thirties, from the wreckage.
Despite their valiant attempts to revive them, paramedics pronounced both women dead at the scene.
The third victim, a man in his thirties, was trapped inside the submerged vehicle.
The SAPS Search and Rescue Units from Pietermaritzburg swiftly deployed a technical rescue system to retrieve him from the water. Despite their best efforts, he too was declared deceased upon extraction.
