Police in KwaZulu-Natal have yet to establish the motive behind the murder of a couple found dead inside their holiday accommodation unit on the South Coast on New Year’s Day.

One of the victims has been identified as Sarbhera Amod, a 38-year-old member of the Democratic Alliance (DA) from Mpumalanga. She was staying with her partner, whose identity has not yet been disclosed. Both were discovered with gunshot wounds inside their holiday unit in Margate.

Provincial police spokesperson Colonel Paul Magwaza confirmed that the deaths have triggered a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the double murder.

Family members were reportedly in the vicinity when the incident occurred, which is believed to have taken place in the early hours of Thursday.

Amod’s mother, who was sleeping in a room adjacent to the couple’s unit, raised the alarm after hearing a heated argument followed by the sound of gunfire. Concerned for the safety of her daughter and her partner, she went to investigate and was confronted with a devastating scene — both victims lying fatally wounded.

As police work to piece together the sequence of events, the motive for the killings remains unknown. A 9mm Beretta pistol was found at the crime scene.

Police have confirmed that no arrests have been made and have appealed to members of the public with information to come forward to assist with the investigation.

The Democratic Alliance expressed deep sadness over Amod’s death, describing her as a person of “courageous spirit and a brilliant mind” who dedicated her life to serving her community.

DA senior provincial leader and Mpumalanga legislature member Tersia Marshall said she was devastated by the news.

“I am at a loss for words and in total shock. A day meant to bring joy and gratitude at the start of a new year has instead been marked by tragic news. A year that should symbolise fresh opportunities and renewed possibilities has begun with a profound and heartbreaking loss,” Marshall said.

“Her passing is not only a loss to her family, but to all whose lives she touched through her kindness, leadership and presence. My sincere condolences go to her family, friends and loved ones during this painful time. May her beautiful soul rest in peace.”
