The KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Government awarded the top matric achievers for the year 2025 at the International Convention Centre (ICC) in Durban on Tuesday.

This event spotlighted not only academic excellence but also resilience and character, as students from diverse backgrounds gathered to celebrate their hard work and triumphs.

Leading the pack from the Umlazi District is Wang Kuo-Hung, a student at Northwood High, who clinched the top spot, garnering second place in the province.

Kuo-Hung, also known as Benson Wang, has carved a niche for himself through remarkable academic discipline, quiet leadership, and extensive personal integrity.

Throughout his matric year, he adeptly balanced the rigours of academics alongside his prefect responsibilities, setting a calm and positive example for his peers.

His humility and willingness to lend support have earned him respect among both staff and students. “It feels unreal to be number one in the district,” Kuo-Hung expressed to the Daily News during the celebration.

Despite the challenges posed by the exams, which he felt were tougher than past papers, he remained resolute and proud of his achievements, acknowledging the support from his parents and friends.

Benson, who is drawn to the analytical nature of subjects like Physics and Mathematics, plans to pursue a degree in Actuarial Science at Stellenbosch University.

“My symbols are very good; I only have A’s and B’s, so I think I can qualify,” he added optimistically.

Coming in first place in the province, however, is Naicker Ethan Neil from Port Shepstone Secondary School in the Ugu District.

Neil has demonstrated consistent academic growth and resilience throughout his schooling, overcoming personal challenges through determination.

His strong curiosity for learning, particularly in Mathematics and Physical Sciences, has laid a solid foundation for his future pursuits.

Gracious in success, Ethan expressed his gratitude on behalf of the top ten achievers, thanking teachers for their unwavering support and the Department of Education for celebrating their achievements together.

“We have so much more to give, and to come, so power those engines.

Go full steam ahead and do amazing things, as I'm sure we are all capable,” he said with enthusiasm.

With aspirations to study medicine at the University of Cape Town, Neil noted that Mathematics will undoubtedly play a role in his future career, underscoring the importance of a comprehensive education.
