Four suspects linked to a string of violent crimes were shot and killed during an intelligence-driven police operation at Adam’s Mission, within the KwaMakhutha policing precinct south of Durban, on Thursday evening.
KwaZulu-Natal SAPS said the suspects were wanted in connection with armed robberies, house robberies, carjackings and kidnappings that had left communities in Umbumbulu and surrounding areas living in fear.
According to police, officers were conducting an intelligence-led operation when they spotted a vehicle matching the description of one allegedly used by the suspects during their crime spree.
“Police identified and followed the vehicle on Sheleni Road, where the suspects opened fire, leading to a shootout,” the SAPS said in a statement.
After the exchange of gunfire, four suspects were found to have sustained fatal gunshot wounds. No police officers were injured during the incident.
One suspect managed to flee the scene, and a manhunt has been launched to track him down.
Police have described the operation as part of ongoing efforts to dismantle violent criminal networks operating in the southern parts of Durban.
Investigations into the incident were continuing, and police have urged anyone with information on the whereabouts of the fleeing suspect to come forward.
This is a developing story.
