Heartbreaking cries, visible disappointment and deep grief marked a mass prayer and memorial service held for the 11 people who lost their lives in anc accident on the R102 near Isipingo, south of Durban, last week.
Family members, friends, relatives and neighbours gathered in large numbers at King Zwelithini Stadium in Umlazi, where the remembrance service was organised by the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Transport.
Clergymen from various church denominations took turns sharing the Word of God and offering comfort to grieving families who are still coming to terms with the sudden loss of their loved ones.
Several relatives of the deceased were given an opportunity to pay tribute, with many of the emotional speeches drawing tears from those in attendance.
One particularly moving tribute was delivered by Sibongiseni Ncanana, the uncle of Samkelo Sithole, a learner at Swelihle High School in Umlazi’s Section C. Ncanana emotionally recounted how the young learner’s death had devastated him and his family, leaving many in the crowd visibly shaken.
