A 1.5-metre Black Mamba was safely captured in a garage in Oakford, KwaZulu-Natal, this past Sunday afternoon.
The highly venomous snake was discovered lurking beneath a wall-unit cupboard in a storeroom, prompting a call for assistance from locals aware of its dangerous reputation.
Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) received an urgent request for help as concerns grew regarding the presence of the reptile.
Nkosinathi Ndaba, the RUSA Area Manager, was dispatched to the scene to assess the situation.
Upon arrival, Ndaba found the creature coiled in a corner, perfectly camouflaged among the clutter of the garage. He was able to secure the snake without any incidents, ensuring the safety of both the residents and the reptile.
“Black Mambas are incredibly fast and can be aggressive when threatened, so it’s essential to handle such situations with care," Ndaba remarked after the capture.
Once captured, the Black Mamba was carefully transported away from the property to a suitable, safe location.
Local residents were relieved as the tension in the air dissipated, thankful for the swift action of RUSA and the expertise of Nkosinathi Ndaba.
This incident served as a stark reminder of the potential dangers of living in proximity to wildlife, especially in areas known for their rich biodiversity.
Safety experts advise homeowners to remain vigilant and aware of their surroundings, particularly during the warmer months when snake sightings tend to increase.
