The Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) team from Park Rynie successfully apprehended a reckless motorist who had escaped after a dangerous high-speed chase.
This incident has garnered praise from Siboniso Duma, the MEC for Transport and Human Settlements, who commended the team's use of cutting-edge artificial intelligence technology and meticulous investigation methods.
On 9 February 2026, the RTI team pulled over the motorist, clocking him dangerously at 204 km/h. Faced with the prospect of spending time in police custody, the motorist made a reckless decision to flee the scene, forgetting his identification document, which was left in the possession of the RTI team.
This lapse would soon prove to be pivotal in his capture.
Utilising sophisticated AI-driven systems, Duma said the RTI team embarked on a state-of-the-art search that involved analysing high-resolution footage and real-time data analytics.
"This technology allowed them to trace the motorist's movements and ultimately track him down to a Golf Estate on the South Coast," he said.
The investigation revealed that the motorist had attempted to evade the authorities by removing the registration plates from his vehicle.
However, the RTI team's AI systems did not miss a beat. Equipped with advanced CCTV and IoT sensors, they monitored the situation closely and even identified another individual attempting to remove the vehicle from the Golf Estate.
With precise coordination facilitated by technology, the RTI team managed to locate the motorist hiding in a villa and executed his arrest. Their actions underscored the effectiveness of modern technology in enforcing road safety regulations and deterring reckless behaviour on the roads.
Following his arrest, the motorist appeared in the Scottburgh Magistrates Court, facing multiple charges including speeding, reckless driving, and evading traffic police. He was granted bail set at R3000 and is scheduled to return to court with his attorney on 25 February 2026.
