SAPS officials and their unions should be embarrassed about their poor work ethic. Because of their poor performance, the army has to take over their responsibilities. The President must however ensure accountability because our SAPs are lethargic and lazy as they rely on the army and private security to do their work. Shameful. | Anonymous

Half a million fake grant claims flagged: SASSA should scrutinise every social grant application before these individuals become recipients, and pay out to individuals that are not entitled to it. Applicants are inputting false information on the application form i.e. circumstances have changed (rental income exceeding R100k), incorrect address, marital status (married - state divorced or separated), and collecting retirement annuity.
These individuals that are conducting this unscrupulous act need to be fined, jailed or requested to pay back the money. Look at the R500m that will not be paid out, these funds can be put to better use with our failing infrastructure. | Pradesh Sivaganas

Genocide the world’s greatest moral failure

Genocide continues across the world today – and the world’s silence encourages this grotesque form of inhumanity.

Genocide occurs when a group of people is stripped of its human rights – political, civil and economic – and subjected to coercion that deprives them of the conditions essential for maintaining health and life, leading to mass death.

History has shown that few crimes generate the moral opprobrium associated with genocide. This gruesome act reflects a criminal intent to destroy or permanently cripple a human group, shocking the collective conscience of the global community like almost no other offence.

On December 11, 1948, the General Assembly of the United Nations passed a resolution condemning genocide as a crime: “Genocide is a denial of the right of existence of entire human groups, as homicide is the denial of the right to live of individual human beings.” The resolution made clear that genocide is wholly independent of crimes against peace or war crimes.

Genocide is often conceived as the asymmetrical slaughter of an unorganised people by an organised force under military command. In 1951, a subsequent definition at the United Nations Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide came into effect, making genocide a crime for which individuals could be indicted, whether in times of peace or war.

Article 2 of the Geneva Conventions identifies numerous assaults on life and liberty that are now prevalent across conflict zones. As Judge Robert H Jackson stated: “We do not accept the paradox that legal responsibility should be the least where power is the greatest.”

Over the past 80 years, the world has witnessed numerous major acts of genocide, yet very few perpetrators have been held accountable. From 1900 to 1987, an estimated 39 million people were killed in genocidal acts. From 1988 to 2026, a further 25 million innocent civilians were lost in atrocities linked to conflicts involving member states of the United Nations.

The persistence of such crimes is a stark reminder that global commitments to justice and human rights remain unevenly enforced. Until meaningful accountability is consistently pursued, genocide will continue to haunt humanity. | FAROUK ARAIE Benoni

Local govt steps up for farmers in crisis

The DA in Mooi-uMngeni welcomes the decisive intervention by the DA-led uMngeni Municipality, under the leadership of Mayor Chris Pappas and his team of councillors, to introduce rates rebate for farmers affected by the Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) outbreak.

While local government has no direct mandate to manage animal disease outbreaks, municipalities do have a responsibility to support residents and local economies where possible.

uMngeni has demonstrated what responsive, caring, and practical local governance looks like by stepping in to provide relief to farmers under severe financial strain.

To our knowledge, uMngeni is currently the only municipality offering this form of direct rates relief to affected farmers. This initiative reflects the DA’s commitment to protecting jobs, supporting food security, and standing alongside local producers during times of crisis.In addition to the rates rebate, the municipality has undertaken several practical support measures, including:

  • Installing restriction control signage;
  • Providing branding irons and tagging support for animal identification ahead of vaccine rollout;
    Running training programmes to support SAPS in carrying out their mandated enforcement role;
  • Conducting education programmes at local dip tanks and with communal livestock associations;
  • Opening and maintaining four municipal livestock handling facilities;
  • Engaging amakhosi and izinduna to secure buy-in across rural areas;
  • Ensuring a large animal pound facility is available with special quarantine capacity; and
  • Driving public awareness, including a community farmers’ FMD WhatsApp group.

The DA also welcomes the progress being made at national level to tackle the FMD crisis, including the President’s clasification of a National State of Disaster following sustained pressure from the Minister of Agriculture, the DA’s John Steenhuisen.

This declaration is a critical step toward accelerating interventions, restoring confidence in the livestock sector, and working toward the full eradication of the disease.

We now call on other municipalities in FMD-affected areas to follow suit and consider similar relief measures within their means. Local government must play its part in supporting farmers and safeguarding rural economies.

This is the DA difference: practical solutions, responsive leadership, and a commitment to the communities we serve. | Edwin Macrae Bath, MP & Mmabatho Tembe, MPL Democratic Alliance
